MAYBE IT’S TIME TO CUT THE CAKE
CENTURIES OLD TRADITIONS
When you think of a wedding a few things always come to mind, the happy couple, beautiful floral arrangements, and a delicious multi-tiered cake! But how did cake even end up being part of the equation anyway? Have you ever wondered? The earliest instances of wedding cakes appear in Ancient Rome. In those days, the ceremony would conclude with a cake being broken over the bride’s head to bring luck and fertility to the newlyweds. Different from the modern sweet cakes we’re accustomed to, Ancient Roman “cakes” were typically made from wheat or barley and weren’t very soft. The modern wedding cake we know today came about in 1882 at the wedding of Prince Leopold.
